RISE workshop – Get empowered: Social and Psychological Safety in Academia

June 20 @ 13:15 - 17:00

Description:

The past couple of years, countless incidences, research reports and newspaper articles have raised issues around social and psychological safety in academia. During this workshop, we explore the different aspects of social and psychological safety, to better understand the reality behind this relatively sudden focus on safety within the academic community. After a plenary exploration of the topic, we kindly invite those attending to – voluntarily of course, without any obligation – in smaller subgroups share their experiences on psychological and social safety as female beta scientists. The goal of the workshop is to empower participants to, directly or indirectly, contribute to a psychologically and socially safe working environment, for yourself and the people around you.

Date and Location:

June 20, 13h15-17h00 @ Huygens, room 2.04

Organised by Downsideup:

Downsideup focusses on the Human Side of Research, an underexposed topic that deserves more attention. Why? A productive, healthy, creative and inclusive work culture should be the standard right? Not only for good science, but also in order to create a workplace where talent can develop, now and in the future. Downsideup is founded by Simon Douw in 2010. Educated as a psychologist, philosopher and lawyer, Simon has trained over 6000 researchers in leadership, collaboration skills, strategy and academic problem solving. His experience in embarking on solo polar circle expeditions gave him a keen interest in how to grow (professional) autonomy have been training research teams and communities. The ambition of Downsideup is to help creating and maintaining healthy and productive research communities and guide teams and organisations towards creating a more effective organisational culture.
