Leiden University’s annual Diversity Symposium
January 13 @ 09:30 - 17:00Free
Leiden University’s annual Diversity and Inclusion Symposium entitled “Inclusivity with law: what does it mean to look at diversity and inclusion from a legal perspective?” will take place online on 13 January 2022 from 9.30 to 17.00.
Inclusivity through law
The law plays an important role in supporting diversity, equity and inclusion but can also be the source of inequality and differentiation. How can legal education and the study of law foster a more inclusive society? We are excited to welcome Professor Sociology of Law Ashley Terlouw (Radboud University Nijmegen) as our keynote speaker. She will explore the gap between the law and the persistence of discrimination in everyday life and the role universities can play in fostering inclusion and addressing exclusionary practices. Professor Terlouw has published widely on equal treatment, conflict resolution and migration law.
This symposium is a collaboration between the D&I Expertise Office, Leiden Law School and the National Council of Deans in Law. The aim is to offer a space to discuss the relationship between diversity and inclusion and the study of law, and to give a broad audience of students, professional staff and scholars the opportunity to meet, engage and gain ideas and tools that will help take further steps towards greater diversity and inclusion.
The programme will feature panel discussions, lectures and workshops on a wide range of topics, including a dialogue on the law and experiences of exclusion, studying as a first-generation student, working with autism, tools for inclusive education and curricula, bystander intervention and more.
