SUMMARY:International Women's Day 2025 - 'Accelerate Action'
DESCRIPTION:International Women’s Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years\, as have many of the issues that still impact women’s advancement. Since 1911\, IWD belongs to all who care about women’s equality. Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to forge gender parity. \nAt the current rate of progress\, it will take 134 years\, which is roughly five generations from now\, to reach full gender parity in 2158\, according to data from the World Economic Forum. \nFocusing on the need to Accelerate Action emphasizes the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face\, both in personal and professional spheres. \nCollectively\, we can Accelerate Action for gender equality. \nStep forward in solidarity for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 on March 8 to help #AccelerateAction. \nSource: International Women’s Day 2025

SUMMARY:Annie Romein-Verschoor Lecture - Beta Women and Alpha Men: On the Role of Gender in AI
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Leiden University organizes the Annie Romein-Verschoor Lecture on or around International Women’s Day\, March 8. This year the Lecture will be delivered by Maaike Harbers\, lector Artificial Intelligence & Society at the knowledge center Creating 010 in Rotterdam. \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) plays an increasingly significant role in society\, shaping the information we see\, the way we work\, and the choices we make. While AI impacts nearly everyone\, it is developed by a relatively small\, predominantly male group. As a result\, AI applications often do not function equally well for everyone. For example\, facial recognition software makes more errors with women—especially Black women—recruitment algorithms are less likely to match women with high-paying jobs\, and generative AI applications reinforce existing stereotypes\, such as portraying women as nurturing and service-oriented. This lecture examines the causes and consequences of the lack of female perspectives in the AI sector and explores what is needed to make AI work for everyone. \nAnnie Romein-Verschoor served as a role model for many women by successfully building a career and gaining recognition while balancing the “dual calling” of being a working mother. Through her articles\, she encouraged women to pursue their talents beyond the responsibilities of family care\, embodying a powerful example for women’s emancipation. \nMore information and registration: Annie Romein-Verschoorlezing 2025 – Universiteit Leiden \n

SUMMARY:Conference Safe & Sound - Social Safety in Fieldwork
DESCRIPTION:There is increasing attention in both science and the media to issues of unwanted behavior and social safety. However\, one underexposed topic in this discussion is fieldwork. Every year\, in addition to staff members\, many students\, PhD candidates\, and postdocs head into the field. \nFieldwork provides chance to make discoveries in remote places where adventure awaits! At the same time\, fieldwork can present young\, ambitious students and researchers with situations that are not always socially safe. When things go wrong\, it deeply affects these enthusiastic students and scientists—sometimes to the extent that they abandon their studies or research altogether\, and the impact lingers for years. \nOn February 13\, 2025\, Naturalis Biodiversity Center and LNVH are organizing a national conference on (social) safety in fieldwork\, titled Safe & Sound. During this afternoon\, experienced professionals\, experts\, and specialists will explore how we can make academic fieldwork as safe as possible for our students and researchers. The topics will include training and education\, policies\, and leadership. \nFor more information and registration: Home | Safe & Sound

SUMMARY:International Day of Women and Girls in Science (United Nations)
DESCRIPTION:A significant gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines all over the world. Even though women have made tremendous progress towards increasing their participation in higher education\, they are still under-represented in these fields. \nDid you know? \n\nWomen are typically given smaller research grants than their male colleagues and\, while they represent 33.3% of all researchers\, only 12% of members of national science academies are women.\nIn cutting edge fields such as artificial intelligence\, only one in five professionals (22%) is a woman.\nDespite a shortage of skills in most of the technological fields driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution\, women still account for only 28% of engineering graduates and 40% of graduates in computer science and informatics.\nFemale researchers tend to have shorter\, less well-paid careers. Their work is underrepresented in high-profile journals and they are often passed over for promotion.\n\nDuring the International Day of Women and Girls in Science these ongoing challenges highlighted and the importance of advancing equity and inclusion in STEM disciplines is emphasized. \nSource: International Day of Women and Girls in Science | United Nations \nFor more information: Previous Events – February11

SUMMARY:RISE workshop - Get empowered: Social and Psychological Safety in Academia
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThe past couple of years\, countless incidences\, research reports and newspaper articles have raised issues around social and psychological safety in academia. During this workshop\, we explore the different aspects of social and psychological safety\, to better understand the reality behind this relatively sudden focus on safety within the academic community. After a plenary exploration of the topic\, we kindly invite those attending to – voluntarily of course\, without any obligation – in smaller subgroups share their experiences on psychological and social safety as female beta scientists. The goal of the workshop is to empower participants to\, directly or indirectly\, contribute to a psychologically and socially safe working environment\, for yourself and the people around you. \n  \nDate and Location: \nJune 20\, 13h15-17h00 @ Huygens\, room 2.04 \nFor whom? \nFor RISE members (postdocs\, lecturers\, assistant/associate/full professor). \nIf you are interested to follow this workshop – but are not a member – please notify us. We will place you on a list and when spots are available we will contact you. \nLimited capacity! Sign-up as soon as possible via the registration form. \n \n  \n  \n  \nOrganised by Downsideup: \nDownsideup focusses on the Human Side of Research\, an underexposed topic that deserves more attention. Why? A productive\, healthy\, creative and inclusive work culture should be the standard right? Not only for good science\, but also in order to create a workplace where talent can develop\, now and in the future. Downsideup is founded by Simon Douw in 2010. Educated as a psychologist\, philosopher and lawyer\, Simon has trained over 6000 researchers in leadership\, collaboration skills\, strategy and academic problem solving. His experience in embarking on solo polar circle expeditions gave him a keen interest in how to grow (professional) autonomy have been training research teams and communities. The ambition of Downsideup is to help creating and maintaining healthy and productive research communities and guide teams and organisations towards creating a more effective organisational culture.

SUMMARY:LNVH Spring Symposium - The Inclusive University: Walking the Talk
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, LNVH welcomes PhDs\, postdocs\, assistant/associate and full professors from Dutch universities and university medical centres\, as well as policy makers and policy advisors at the LNVH Spring Symposium. This year our Spring Symposium will take place on Friday\, June 14th 2024 between 12:00 and 18:00 CEST at The Colour Kitchen in Utrecht. This year’s theme is ‘The Inclusive University: Walking the Talk’. \nTheme \nThis year’s theme is ‘The Inclusive University‘. The percentages of women in the higher echelons and academic management at universities are increasing. However\, a strong focus on the betterment of the position of women in academia and prevention of the outflow of women academics is still necessary\, as indicated for example by the declining growth percentages of women professors in the Monitor 2023. How do we maintain this focus on the equal representation of women? How do we achieve the betterment of the position of all women in academia\, regardless of their background? And how do we monitor which women actually progress to top positions in academia? How do we ensure that broader D&I policies complement policies focused on women and vice versa? How do we create an inclusive university where all talent thrives? We will discuss these – and many more – topics with our keynote speakers\, our panelists\, and hopefully also with you. Working language of the event will be English. \nFor more information and registration for the event\, click here to go to the website of LNVH.

DESCRIPTION:Dear RISE members\, \nWe would like to invite you for the following event; \nWhat: Meet the confidential counsellor\nDate: 20 December 2022\nTime: 14.30-15.30\nLocation: Steenis E0.03B \nOn December 20th 2022 between 14.30-15.30\, we have invited Marije Bedaux who is confidential counsellor for personnel affairs of Leiden University. What can a confidential counsellor do for you? It’s already in the name. Everything you tell a confidential counsellor is confidential. In fact\, a confidential counsellor is even liable if they breach their duty of secrecy and confidentiality. Considering all the recent reports in Dutch media of unacceptable behaviour\, more attention than ever is being paid to the role of the confidential counsellor within organisations. But what do we actually know about this position\, and what can it do for you? \nWe asked Marije Bedaux to meet with the RISE members. You are invited to come up with questions to her on her tasks. In the first 15 minutes of the meeting we lump the questions and then Marije will have a dialogue with us guided by the questions. Note; you can come up will all questions and we do not need to discuss cases in detail. With this we hope to create awareness and hope that the path to follow when you have questions is more open. \nPlease click this link to subscribe so we know how many persons we can expect.  \nYou are welcome to submit your questions already. Alternatively\, we will cluster the questions 15 min before the meeting with Marije Bedaux starts. \nInformation on which room the event will be held will be posted shortly.

SUMMARY:Leiden University’s annual Diversity Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Leiden University’s annual Diversity and Inclusion Symposium entitled “Inclusivity with law: what does it mean to look at diversity and inclusion from a legal perspective?” will take place online on 13 January 2022 from 9.30 to 17.00. \nInclusivity through law\nThe law plays an important role in supporting diversity\, equity and inclusion but can also be the source of inequality and differentiation. How can legal education and the study of law foster a more inclusive society? We are excited to welcome Professor Sociology of Law Ashley Terlouw (Radboud University Nijmegen) as our keynote speaker. Professor Terlouw has published widely on equal treatment\, conflict resolution and migration law. \nNational collaboration\nThis symposium is a collaboration between the D&I Expertise Office\, Leiden Law School and the National Council of Deans in Law. The aim is to offer a space to discuss the relationship between diversity and inclusion and the study of law\, and to give a broad audience of students\, professional staff and scholars the opportunity to meet\, engage and gain ideas and tools that will help take further steps towards greater diversity and inclusion. \nProgramme\nThe programme will feature panel discussions\, lectures and workshops on a wide range of topics\, including a dialogue on the law and experiences of exclusion\, studying as a first-generation student\, working with autism\, tools for inclusive education and curricula\, bystander intervention and more. \n09:30 Walk-in \n09:45 Welcome by Jasmijn Mioch \n09:50 Opening by Annetje Ottow\, President of the Executive Board \n10:00 Ashley Terlouw: Equity\, diversity and the university \n11:00 Break \n11:30 Panel discussion with (among others) Joanne van der Leun\, Aya Ezawa and Susanne Deen \n12:15 Lunch \n13:30 Workshops \n15:00 Break \n15:20 Reflection and conclusion with President Annetje Ottow\, and Dean Joanne van der Leun \nPlease register here if you want to participate in the symposium and one of the workshops.

SUMMARY:RISE workshop: The Productive Researcher - Fast Track Impact
DESCRIPTION:Interested to find out how you can become significantly more productive as a researcher in a fraction of your current working day?\nWe kindly invite you to attend the RISE workshop: The Productive Researcher \nRather than learning (yet more) time management techniques\, in this course you will learn new ways of thinking that will reframe your relationship with work! \nThe workshop is based on Prof Reed’s book\, The Productive Researcher\, in which he draws on interviews with some of the world’s highest performing researchers\, the literature and his own experience to identify a small number of important insights that can transform how researchers work. \nDate: 26th November 2020\nTime: 09.30-16.30 (with breaks from 11.00-11.30\, 13.00-14.00 and 15.00-15.30)\nMaximum Number of participants: no limit\nCosts: Free of Charge \nTo register for the workshop\, please click here >> \nThe workshop is open to everybody working at the Faculty of Science\, Leiden. So\, please feel free to forward this message to anybody you feel that might be interested. \n  \nThe Trainer\nMark Reed is Professor of Socio-Technical Innovation at Newcastle University and Visiting Professor at Birmingham City University and the University of Leeds. \nProf Reed works 37 hours a week and never works weekends\, and yet over the last two years he published three books\, 23 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and won 7 new grants bringing in almost £2M to his institution as part of projects worth over £30M in total. He did this while pursuing international impacts from his research and running spin-out company\, Fast Track Impact\, through which he personally trained >5000 researchers during this period. \n  \nHow does it work? \nThe workshop works by shifting you from focusing on tasks to focusing on priorities\, linked to your values and identity. By working regularly on your most important priorities\, even if only for a small proportion of the working day\, you can become increasingly motivated to make time for these priorities\, creating a powerful positive feedback loop. Rather than encouraging you to extract ever more productivity from your working life\, the emphasis is on using your new-found productivity to get better work-life balance\, and by resting well\, working even more effectively. \nIn 4 sessions you will learn to be more productive\, more satisfied with what you produce\, and enable you to be happy working less\, and being more. \nSession 1: Work less to achieve more\nSession 2: Taking achievable action towards SMART goals\nSession 4: Time savers\nSession 5: Next steps \n  \n

Scientists work together with people all over the world. Appreciation of cultural diversity and good intercultural communication skills are of high value.  We are part of a colourful community and it can open doors to learn more about other cultures. \nHowever\, in general the focus on the content of the work is so strong\, that we miss opportunities to gain a better understanding of this cultural wealth. \nFor sure\, cooperation with colleagues becomes more fun and easier when based on a mutual understanding. Are you curious and eager to learn more about intercultural communication? Follow our online workshop. \nYou will gain insights about cultural differences and communication techniques that are valuable in any collaboration. \nTwo online sessions of max 3 hours\, provided in Kaltura Live Room \nTuesday September 29: 9h30-12h30 \nTuesday October 6: 13h00-16h00 \nMaximum Number of participants: 8 \nCosts: Free of Charge \nOpen to everybody working at the Faculty of Science\, Leiden. In case of oversubscription members of RISE and people that subscribed to the first workshop but could not attend have priority. \nTo register for the workshop\, please click here >> \nOrganised in collaboraton with Aletta Wubben
