SUMMARY:RISE Event: Meet the Confidential Counsellor
DESCRIPTION:Dear RISE members\, \nWe would like to invite you for the following event; \nWhat: Meet the confidential counsellor\nDate: 20 December 2022\nTime: 14.30-15.30\nLocation: Steenis E0.03B \nOn December 20th 2022 between 14.30-15.30\, we have invited Marije Bedaux who is confidential counsellor for personnel affairs of Leiden University. What can a confidential counsellor do for you? It’s already in the name. Everything you tell a confidential counsellor is confidential. In fact\, a confidential counsellor is even liable if they breach their duty of secrecy and confidentiality. Considering all the recent reports in Dutch media of unacceptable behaviour\, more attention than ever is being paid to the role of the confidential counsellor within organisations. But what do we actually know about this position\, and what can it do for you? \nWe asked Marije Bedaux to meet with the RISE members. You are invited to come up with questions to her on her tasks. In the first 15 minutes of the meeting we lump the questions and then Marije will have a dialogue with us guided by the questions. Note; you can come up will all questions and we do not need to discuss cases in detail. With this we hope to create awareness and hope that the path to follow when you have questions is more open. \nPlease click this link to subscribe so we know how many persons we can expect.  \nYou are welcome to submit your questions already. Alternatively\, we will cluster the questions 15 min before the meeting with Marije Bedaux starts. \nInformation on which room the event will be held will be posted shortly.

SUMMARY:Leiden University’s annual Diversity Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Leiden University’s annual Diversity and Inclusion Symposium entitled “Inclusivity with law: what does it mean to look at diversity and inclusion from a legal perspective?” will take place online on 13 January 2022 from 9.30 to 17.00. \nInclusivity through law\nThe law plays an important role in supporting diversity\, equity and inclusion but can also be the source of inequality and differentiation. How can legal education and the study of law foster a more inclusive society? We are excited to welcome Professor Sociology of Law Ashley Terlouw (Radboud University Nijmegen) as our keynote speaker. She will explore the gap between the law and the persistence of discrimination in everyday life and the role universities can play in fostering inclusion and addressing exclusionary practices. Professor Terlouw has published widely on equal treatment\, conflict resolution and migration law. \nNational collaboration\nThis symposium is a collaboration between the D&I Expertise Office\, Leiden Law School and the National Council of Deans in Law. The aim is to offer a space to discuss the relationship between diversity and inclusion and the study of law\, and to give a broad audience of students\, professional staff and scholars the opportunity to meet\, engage and gain ideas and tools that will help take further steps towards greater diversity and inclusion. \nProgramme\nThe programme will feature panel discussions\, lectures and workshops on a wide range of topics\, including a dialogue on the law and experiences of exclusion\, studying as a first-generation student\, working with autism\, tools for inclusive education and curricula\, bystander intervention and more. \n09:30 Walk-in \n09:45 Welcome by Jasmijn Mioch \n09:50 Opening by Annetje Ottow\, President of the Executive Board \n10:00 Ashley Terlouw: Equity\, diversity and the university \n11:00 Break \n11:30 Panel discussion with (among others) Joanne van der Leun\, Aya Ezawa and Susanne Deen \n12:15 Lunch \n13:30 Workshops \n15:00 Break \n15:20 Reflection and conclusion with President Annetje Ottow\, and Dean Joanne van der Leun \nPlease register here if you want to participate in the symposium and one of the workshops.

SUMMARY:RISE workshop: The Productive Researcher - Fast Track Impact
DESCRIPTION:Interested to find out how you can become significantly more productive as a researcher in a fraction of your current working day?\nWe kindly invite you to attend the RISE workshop: The Productive Researcher \nRather than learning (yet more) time management techniques\, in this course you will learn new ways of thinking that will reframe your relationship with work! \nThe workshop is based on Prof Reed’s book\, The Productive Researcher\, in which he draws on interviews with some of the world’s highest performing researchers\, the literature and his own experience to identify a small number of important insights that can transform how researchers work. \nDate: 26th November 2020\nTime: 09.30-16.30 (with breaks from 11.00-11.30\, 13.00-14.00 and 15.00-15.30)\nMaximum Number of participants: no limit\nCosts: Free of Charge \nTo register for the workshop\, please click here >> \nThe workshop is open to everybody working at the Faculty of Science\, Leiden. So\, please feel free to forward this message to anybody you feel that might be interested. \n  \nThe Trainer\nMark Reed is Professor of Socio-Technical Innovation at Newcastle University and Visiting Professor at Birmingham City University and the University of Leeds. \nProf Reed works 37 hours a week and never works weekends\, and yet over the last two years he published three books\, 23 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and won 7 new grants bringing in almost £2M to his institution as part of projects worth over £30M in total. He did this while pursuing international impacts from his research and running spin-out company\, Fast Track Impact\, through which he personally trained >5000 researchers during this period. \n  \nHow does it work? \nThe workshop works by shifting you from focusing on tasks to focusing on priorities\, linked to your values and identity. By working regularly on your most important priorities\, even if only for a small proportion of the working day\, you can become increasingly motivated to make time for these priorities\, creating a powerful positive feedback loop. Rather than encouraging you to extract ever more productivity from your working life\, the emphasis is on using your new-found productivity to get better work-life balance\, and by resting well\, working even more effectively. \nIn 4 sessions you will learn to be more productive\, more satisfied with what you produce\, and enable you to be happy working less\, and being more. \nSession 1: Work less to achieve more\nSession 2: Taking achievable action towards SMART goals\nSession 4: Time savers\nSession 5: Next steps \n  \n

SUMMARY:Faculty of Science Education coffee break with RISE
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday April 16 Irene Groot and Miranda van Eck will be guests at the Daily Remote Faculty of Science Coffee Break. The general aim of these coffee break sessions is to share knowledge and ideas amongst colleagues in these challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. All of a sudden we had to work from home and needed to transfer our education and research activities to a remote setting. There are a lot of tips and trips on how to work from home and combine this with e.g. child care. But does it work when there is no longer any separation of work and home life? We hope that you will join us during the coffee break to discuss your experiences of the past weeks in balancing work and life. Looking forward to talking to you over a (bring your own) coffee! \n  \nWhere: Online coffee room https://smart.newrow.com/#/room/yip-964 \nDate: Thursday April 15 2020\, 11.00 – 11.30 \nLanguage: English \n

SUMMARY:Leiden University’s annual Diversity Symposium
DESCRIPTION:From diversity to inclusion: How to make the curriculum and learning environment more inclusive\n  \nThe symposium will take place on Wednesday January 22nd\, 2020\, at the Faculty of Social Science. \nMany of our teaching programs are attracting a growing diversity of students and staff members of diverse backgrounds\, contributing to an increasingly diverse community. The presence of such diversity raises the question of how the university can not only be diverse\, but also become an inclusive learning and working environment where all students and staff feel at home\, and where everyone has the opportunity to develop their talents. \nThe curriculum plays an important role here: Do we teach from a singular perspective\, or do we engage with diversity of authors and perspectives? Does our teaching reach and engage all of our students? What does it take to incorporate race in discussions of the curriculum\, teaching\, and diversity and inclusion? How can everyone contribute to a safe and inspiring learning environment for all students and staff members? \nWe are excited to be able to welcome Kamna Patel (Vice Dean Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion\, UCL)  and Frank Tuitt (Sr. Advisor to the Chancellor and Provost on Diversity and Inclusion University of Denver) to explore these questions with you. Their talks will be followed by a series of interactive workshops which focus\, among others\, on implicit bias\, inclusive teaching practice\, racism and networks of alliances. \nThe afternoon program (which begins at 13:00 and ends at 17:30) will be followed by the annual award ceremony of the van Bergen Fund and a buffet dinner.

SUMMARY:This week discoveries: Prof. dr. Liesbeth de Lange
DESCRIPTION:Prediction of drug behavior in the brain: from hocus pocus to a mathematical model \nDespite enormous advances in CNS research\, CNS disorders remain the world’s leading cause of disability. This accounts for more hospitalizations and prolonged care than almost all other diseases combined\, and indicates a high unmet need for good CNS drugs and drug therapies. \nFollowing dosing\, not only the chemical properties of the drug and blood–brain barrier (BBB) transport\, but also many other processes will ultimately determine brain target site kinetics and consequently the CNS effects. The rate and extent of all these processes are regulated dynamically\, and thus condition dependent. Therefore\, differences in conditions such as species\, gender\, genetic background\, tissue\, age\, diet\, disease\, drug treatment etc.\, results in considerable inter-individual and intra-individual variation\, often encountered in CNS drug therapy. \nFor effective therapy\, drugs should access the CNS “at the right place\, at the right time\, and at the right concentration”. To improve CNS therapies and drug development\, details of inter-species and inter-condition variations are needed to enable target site pharmacokinetics and associated CNS effects to be translated between species and between disease states. Specifically\, such studies need to include information about unbound drug concentrations which drive the effects. To date the only technique that can obtain unbound drug concentrations in brain is microdialysis. This (minimally) invasive technique cannot be readily applied to humans\, and we need to rely on translational approaches to predict human brain distribution\, target site kinetics\, and therapeutic effects of CNS drugs. \nIn this presentation by Prof. dr. Liesbeth de Lange of the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research\, strategic and systematic CNS drug research using advanced preclinical experimental designs and mathematical modelling\, according to the “Mastermind Research Approach” is explained. It has provided knowledge on the contributions and variability of individual processes in animals that can be translated to the human situation. Thus\, on the basis of a number advanced preclinical microdialysis based investigations a mathematical model has been developed that is able to predict drug behavior within human CNS. Examples will be provided on the predictive value of this comprehensive mathematical model. \n  \nThis Week’s Discoveries takes place every Tuesday between 13.15 and 13.55 hours in the  Sitterzaal of the Oort building. \nIn a 15 minute talk two of our scientists gives a presentation aimed at a broad audience followed by 5 minutes discussion. \nBefore the lectures\,12.50- 13.15 hrs a small lunch is available. \n  \nPrior to the lecture of Prof. dr. Liesbeth de Lange\, Dr Pleuni Pennings (San Francisco State University) will present a Lorentz Center Highlight  lecture \nTitle Challenging conventional wisdom on the evolution of resistance to multi-drug HIV treatment: Lessons from data and modeling. \n Speaker Pleuni Pennings (San Francisco State University) Pleuni is an assistant professor and evolutionary biologist it the Biology department at SFSU. Most of her  research currently focuses the evolution of drug resistance in HIV. She wants to understand what determines the rate of evolution of drug resistance\, so that we can find ways to halt the evolution of drug resistance. She is participating in the Lorentz Center workshop Predicting Evolution that is being held from 7 Oct 2019 through 11 Oct 2019

SUMMARY:RISE "Get Connected" Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Dear RISE-members\, \nHereby you are kindly invited to join us for an informal RISE lunch on March 29. Having lunch together is a great opportunity to make some new contacts and get connected with the other female scientists working at our Science Faculty. \nPlease let us know if you are planning to come; so that we can ensure that we order enough food. \nWe hope to see many of you! \nBest wishes\, \nMartina\, Miranda and Irene \n  \nInformation: \nDate: Friday March 29 \nTime: 12:00 – 13:30 \nLocation: EM1.17 (New Gorlaeus Building) \nTarget audience: RISE members \nFree of charge \nPlease sign up for the lunch with this online form >> \n  \nWe would like to discuss the following topics with you\, but we would also love to hear what you would like to discuss! \n\nThe effect of “life-changing events” (e.g. having a baby\, becoming ill\, having to take care of family members) on your work\, contract\, tenure track schedule. In Groningen\, they recently increased the period of a tenure track position to seven years\, in case of “life-changing events”. What do is our opinion on this; would this also be good to have at our Faculty\, and should that not also be the case for PhD students and Postdocs? We would like to hear your opinion and examples of cases (women AND men) that you may be aware of where this would have been a solution for the person involved.\nThe official reaction from the Faculty Board to the pay-gap at our Faculty between men and women (if we receive it on time). We had a meeting with the Dean\, Geert de Snoo\, about this\, and we have asked him for an official reaction that we can share and discuss with you.\nNew roles in RISE: as of January 2019 Irene Groot has joined the board of RISE. Annemarie Meijer and Miranda van Eck are representing RISE at the university network Sophia.\nAnnual activities calendar\nBiennial report of RISE (due in September)

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace lecture "Social Robots: Research Challenges and Ethical Issues" by Prof. Carme Torras
DESCRIPTION:On Friday November 30\, LIACS organizes the Ada Lovelace lecture ‘Social Robots: Research Challenges and Ethical Issues’ by Prof. Carme Torras of the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial in Barcelona. \nProf. Torras has published five books and about three hundred papers in the areas of robot kinematics\, computer vision\, geometric reasoning\, machine learning\, and manipulation planning. Moreover\, she has participated in many activities to promote Ethics in Robotics. \nRobots are no longer confined to factories\, they are progressively spreading to urban\, social\, and assistive domains. In the coming years we will see robots attending elderly and disabled people\, performing household tasks\, acting as support teachers\, assistants in shopping malls\, receptionists\, guides at trade-fairs and museums\, and even as nannies and playmates. These new robots must be able to interact with people and assist users in a friendly\, effective\, and secure way. How these qualities translate into the traits of a good assistant vary largely not only among cultures\, but also among individuals. \nIn  her lecture Prof. Torras will provide an overview of the new\, very attractive research challenges these so-called social robots pose\, but also the associate dfundamental ethical issues will be discussed. \nFor more information and registration for the lecture please visit the event page of Leiden University here >> \nThe Ada Lovelace Distinguished Lecture Series brings outstanding computer scientists from around the world to Leiden University. \n  \nDetails: \nLecture:     ‘Social Robots: Research Challenges and Ethical Issues’ door Prof. Carme Torras \nDate           30 November 2018 \nTime          14:00 – 15:15\, followed by drinks \nLocation     Science Campus/Gorlaeus (Einsteinweg 55\, Leiden) \nRoom         Lecture hall C2 (in the Goraeus lecture hall building) \nRegistration    https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/events/2017/11/2018-11-30-ada-lovelace-distinguished-lecture-series
