He did this while pursuing international impacts from his research and running spin-out company\, Fast Track Impact\, through which he personally trained >5000 researchers during this period. \n  \nHow does it work? \nThe workshop works by shifting you from focusing on tasks to focusing on priorities\, linked to your values and identity. DESCRIPTION:From diversity to inclusion: How to make the curriculum and learning environment more inclusive\n  \nThe symposium will take place on Wednesday January 22nd\, 2020\, at the Faculty of Social Science. \nMany of our teaching programs are attracting a growing diversity of students and staff members of diverse backgrounds\, contributing to an increasingly diverse community. The presence of such diversity raises the question of how the university can not only be diverse\, but also become an inclusive learning and working environment where all students and staff feel at home\, and where everyone has the opportunity to develop their talents. \nThe curriculum plays an important role here: Do we teach from a singular perspective\, or do we engage with diversity of authors and perspectives? Does our teaching reach and engage all of our students? What does it take to incorporate race in discussions of the curriculum\, teaching\, and diversity and inclusion? How can everyone contribute to a safe and inspiring learning environment for all students and staff members? \nWe are excited to be able to welcome Kamna Patel (Vice Dean Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion\, UCL)  and Frank Tuitt (Sr. Advisor to the Chancellor and Provost on Diversity and Inclusion University of Denver) to explore these questions with you. SUMMARY:This week discoveries: Prof. dr. Liesbeth de Lange
DESCRIPTION:Prediction of drug behavior in the brain: from hocus pocus to a mathematical model \nDespite enormous advances in CNS research\, CNS disorders remain the world’s leading cause of disability. This accounts for more hospitalizations and prolonged care than almost all other diseases combined\, and indicates a high unmet need for good CNS drugs and drug therapies. \nFollowing dosing\, not only the chemical properties of the drug and blood–brain barrier (BBB) transport\, but also many other processes will ultimately determine brain target site kinetics and consequently the CNS effects. The rate and extent of all these processes are regulated dynamically\, and thus condition dependent. Therefore\, differences in conditions such as species\, gender\, genetic background\, tissue\, age\, diet\, disease\, drug treatment etc.\, results in considerable inter-individual and intra-individual variation\, often encountered in CNS drug therapy. \nFor effective therapy\, drugs should access the CNS “at the right place\, at the right time\, and at the right concentration”. To improve CNS therapies and drug development\, details of inter-species and inter-condition variations are needed to enable target site pharmacokinetics and associated CNS effects to be translated between species and between disease states. Specifically\, such studies need to include information about unbound drug concentrations which drive the effects. To date the only technique that can obtain unbound drug concentrations in brain is microdialysis. This (minimally) invasive technique cannot be readily applied to humans\, and we need to rely on translational approaches to predict human brain distribution\, target site kinetics\, and therapeutic effects of CNS drugs. \nIn this presentation by Prof. dr. Liesbeth de Lange of the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research\, strategic and systematic CNS drug research using advanced preclinical experimental designs and mathematical modelling\, according to the “Mastermind Research Approach” is explained. It has provided knowledge on the contributions and variability of individual processes in animals that can be translated to the human situation. Thus\, on the basis of a number advanced preclinical microdialysis based investigations a mathematical model has been developed that is able to predict drug behavior within human CNS. Examples will be provided on the predictive value of this comprehensive mathematical model. \n  \nThis Week’s Discoveries takes place every Tuesday between 13.15 and 13.55 hours in the  Sitterzaal of the Oort building. \nIn a 15 minute talk two of our scientists gives a presentation aimed at a broad audience followed by 5 minutes discussion. \nBefore the lectures\,12.50- 13.15 hrs a small lunch is available. \n  \nPrior to the lecture of Prof. dr. Most of her  research currently focuses the evolution of drug resistance in HIV. She wants to understand what determines the rate of evolution of drug resistance\, so that we can find ways to halt the evolution of drug resistance. She is participating in the Lorentz Center workshop Predicting Evolution that is being held from 7 Oct 2019 through 11 Oct 2019

She teaches in the fields of organization theory and public management as well as on research methodology and quantitative research methods and techniques. Her research interests include the structure and management of public organizations\, focusing particularly on questions of representative bureaucracy\, diversity management\, leadership and organizational change. \nRecently her research was awarded the Rosabeth Moss Kanter award for excellence in work-family research\, the Charles H. Levine Best Paper Award at the Academy of Management Annual Conference 2014\, the IRSPM best paper award at the International Research Society for Public Management annual conference 2015 and 2017\, and the 2015 Review of Public Personnel Administration best article award.On the 27th of May 2016 prof. dr. Sandra Groeneveld delivered her inaugural lecture: “The relevance of bureaucracy. How to deal with ambivalence in public management” (in Dutch). \nBefore joining Leiden University she was employed at the Department of Public Administration of Erasmus University Rotterdam as an Assistant Professor (2006-2011) and as an Associate Professor (2011-2014). From 2009 until 2013 she also served as the executive director of the Netherlands Institute of Government (NIG)\, the Dutch national graduate school for public administration and political science. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 9 February\, 2019 we celebrate the UN-proclaimed International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2019 in Leiden. At this date\, Leiden University\, National expert organization on girls/women and science/technology VHTO and NOVA collaborate to organise a festive day for (female) scientists and (PhD\, university and high school) students. Also graduates (as well as their daughters and grand-daughters) are cordially invited to attend the event. \nAnd of course RISE will also be present at the event and all RISE members are invited! The event takes place between 10am and 2pm on February 9. \nProminent experts will give a presentation. Confirmed speakers include Physicist Robbert Dijkgraaf\, who will receive a honorary doctorate during the Dies Natalis of Leiden University the day before the festival and Ewine van Dishoeck\, Professor of Molecular astrophysics. Furthermore\, the program consists of fun workshops\, experiments and side activities. \nAt the RISE stand we want to hear your opinion about women in the exact sciences! SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace lecture "Social Robots: Research Challenges and Ethical Issues" by  Prof. Carme Torras
DESCRIPTION:On Friday November 30\, LIACS organizes the Ada Lovelace lecture ‘Social Robots: Research Challenges and Ethical Issues’ by Prof. Carme Torras of the Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial in Barcelona. \nProf. Torras has published five books and about three hundred papers in the areas of robot kinematics\, computer vision\, geometric reasoning\, machine learning\, and manipulation planning. Moreover\, she has participated in many activities to promote Ethics in Robotics. \nRobots are no longer confined to factories\, they are progressively spreading to urban\, social\, and assistive domains. In the coming years we will see robots attending elderly and disabled people\, performing household tasks\, acting as support teachers\, assistants in shopping malls\, receptionists\, guides at trade-fairs and museums\, and even as nannies and playmates. These new robots must be able to interact with people and assist users in a friendly\, effective\, and secure way. DESCRIPTION:Why community is key\nLeiden University believes it is important that all staff and students feel welcome and at home in the academic community. Only then can everyone work to their full capacity and get the best out of themselves. Diversity has many facets: ethnicity\, gender\, sexual orientation\, health\, religion\, age and socio-economic background are just some of them. Leiden University wants to offer an environment in which everyone feels at home and is accepted\, and with which they can identify. \nEach year\, with the help of many people\, our university is getting closer to being a place where all experiences can be shared\, and where open-mindedness and innovation thrive. This raises a number of questions: Are we in fact on the right path? How do you together create an academic community in which diversity and inclusiveness are safeguarded? What should such a community look like\, how can you as a member of staff or a student contribute to this community\, and what obstacles might you come across? These are the themes of the annual diversity symposium to be held this year. \nThis year’s symposium will offer lots of opportunities to talk about what our community should look like\, and how we can create it together. SUMMARY:15th Gender Summit: United in Science and through Science
DESCRIPTION:The theme of GS15 is United in Science and through Science (June 18 and 19). This theme was chosen to reflect the need to: 1) enhance the rapport between different actors and stakeholders in science endeavours (especially post-Brexit) built on shared commitment to gender equality and scientific excellence; 2) advance research for societal challenges with the required sensitivity to local needs and contexts; and 3) advance development and application of cross-disciplinary methods of sex/gender analysis\, for example were basic biology\, environment and socio-economic conditions interact to impact on outcomes. \nThe GS15 programme will discuss a range of new and persistent issues: Why cell’s sex matters? How do sex/gender-related risks impact on life-course? How to improve statistical indicators of gender equality in research? What progress has been achieved in changing research cultures and working conditions so that women and men can participate on equal terms? What actions are needed to ensure fair\, systematic\, and gender bias-free scientific peer review? How to produce the “best gender research” for the targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals? DESCRIPTION:INVITATION SPRING SYMPOSIUM LNVH – May 25\, 2018 – Leiden University – REGISTRATION OPEN \nChallenging poor behaviour in academia: how to tackle and prevent intimidation and abuse of power \nKeynote speakers \n\nOscar David (NL)\, organisation psychologist – published an extensive study about mechanisms of power.\nClaartje Vinkenburg (NL)\, associate professor of organizational behavior – critically explored the impact of implicit bias\, normative beliefs\, and discursive practices on career systems\, patterns\, and outcomes.\nScott Solder (UK)\, executive coach\, trainer and facilitator – developed a groundbreaking workshop on how to challenge inappropriate behaviour\, bullying and harassment in the workplace (used succesfully at for exemple Imperial College London).\n\nLNVH cordially invites you to the Spring Symposium 2018 ‘Challenging Poor Behaviour in Academia – How to tackle and prevent intimidation and abuse of power’ on May 25\, 2018. \nPower\, abuse of power\, harassment\, and misconduct in academia. A theme that deserves attention\, but is often dismissed as non-urgent\, non-existent and therefore: non-important. Contributing to the taboo character of the subject\, is that people simply do not dare to share their experiences for fear of consequences (or worse: lack of consequences). Recently however\, the discussion about abuse of power in academia has certainly kicked off: in the fall of 2017\, ScienceGuide published an article series on harassment. LNVH was consulted and contributed to the series\, because we wish to underline that this is not a ‘new issue that has ‘suddenly’ come up. We think it is important to\, beyond the hype\, focus on substainable attention for the theme and most of all: ways of preventing and dealing with abuse of power. \nThe preliminary programme\, with more information about our speakers\, is attached. \n180417_LNVHSpringSymposiumProgramma_pub \nOscar David will get you up-to-date about mechanisms and structures of power and abuse of power. Claartje Vinkenburg has collected various individual and institutional strategies to reduce sex-based harassment and to improve work-place cultures. In an ‘active bystander training’\, Scott Solder discusses tools to deal with poor behaviour in your own work environment. In the second half of the afternoon we let actors play out cases of poor behaviour\, misconduct and harassment. Together with the audience\, an expert panel discusses logical courses of action and how to tackle and prevent these situations. \nOf course\, the symposium will offer ample time and opportunity to share your own views\, opinions\, and experiences. DESCRIPTION:Women seem to leave the universities more than men. Inge van der Weijden and Thed van Leeuwen have done research into this issue. They will contribute to the discussion of the current gender balance in science by presenting outcomes of their ongoing research. At this meeting also focus groups will be formed and we hope to get input for the upcoming meetings of the network with Vice Rector Hester Bijl. \nGender aspects in career progression of postdocs who obtained a VENI grant\nInge van der Weijden – CWTS \nInge will present the results of a mixed method study on gender aspects in career paths of postdocs in the life sciences. She focuses on postdocs who obtained a prestigious personal (VENI) grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The empirical findings suggest that policies aiming for excellence\, like the VENI\, do not change the current gendered system and discourse of meritocracy in academia. \nDr. Inge van der Weijden is a senior researcher at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS). She conducts research on the motivation\, selection and evaluation of scholars in order to better understand career development of scientists. \nAnalysis of gender distribution in Dutch oncology research\nIn his talk Thed will present the outcomes of the analyses of gender distribution in Dutch contributions to the field of oncology. Analyses show that\, although female researchers contribute less to the total Dutch output in oncology\, their contribution to the field is rapidly increasing\, with some 10%\, up to 27% in 2016. In terms of impact\, there are no meaningful differences between male and female researchers. Female researchers in the field of oncology perform even slightly better than their male colleagues. \nDr. Thed van Leeuwen is a senior researcher at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS). DESCRIPTION:Dear RISE-member\, we like to invite you for a RISE Breakfast at Thursday March 15\, 9h00-10h30 to celebrate International Women’s Day. The theme of this year is Press4Progress. \nLeiden University celebrates International Women’s Day at March 8 with the Annie Romein-Verschoor Lecture by the former Minister of Education\, Culture and Science Jet Bussemaker. The title of the lecture is: “De Nederlandse vrouw: bakfietsmuts of gelukkig deeltijdmens?” Follow this link for more details on the lecture by Jet Bussemaker on March 8 >> \nAt universities women only work 1 hour less a week as compared to men. Nevertheless they receive on average a lower salary as compared to male colleagues of the same age with the same job level. Among professors this difference is a shocking 438 euro per month (see LNVH report).
