Since 2006, the World Economic Forum publishes yearly the Global Gender Gap Report to track the gender-based disparities in 144 countries world-wide with respect to the themes 1) Economic Participation and Opportunity, 2) Educational Attainment, 3) Health and Survival, 4) and Political Empowerment.
The sad conclusion of this year’s report is that “globally, gender parity is shifting into reverse this year for the first time since the World Economic Forum started measuring it.” The Netherlands (place 32) and Belgium (place 31) are no exception: “the two Benelux countries move down several spots due to widening gender gaps in Political Empowerment and wage equality for similar work.” is stated by the authors of the report. In the theme Political empowerment the Netherlands drops 15 places from 10 to 25 and in the theme Economic Participation and Opportunity even 31 places from 51 to 82.
